Over 8,900 Dead, 21,952 Injured

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude struck central Nepal on April 25, 2015, near the city of Kathmandu, causing widespread devastation and loss of life.

The temblor, known as the Gorkha earthquake, is the deadliest to hit the Himalayan nation in 80 years. According to official reports, the earthquake has claimed the lives of 8,962 people and injured another 21,952.

The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Kathmandu, at a depth of about 20 kilometers (12 miles). Nepal, situated on a convergent plate boundary, is prone to frequent seismic activity.
